Cubism, led by Picasso and Braque, is often hailed as the first avant-garde art movement of the 20th century. Drawing influence from African and Native American art, it broke away from traditional European views of form and perspective to create innovative, fragmented images.

Picasso’s famous painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, is widely recognized as the birth of Cubism, showcasing a bold division of objects and figures into distinct sections that reveal multiple perspectives.

From there, Cubism evolved into two main styles: Analytical Cubism, which layered intersecting planes in subdued tones of black, grey, and ochre, and Synthetic Cubism, known for its simpler shapes, vibrant colors, and the introduction of collage elements like newspaper clippings.
