Dadaism sprang up during the harsh times of World War I as a rebellious response against the established order. From 1916 to the mid-1920s, artists across cities like Zurich, Cologne, Hanover, Paris, and New York launched a bold challenge to the politics, social norms, and cultural traditions they blamed for the war’s devastation.

The artists involved in Dada didn’t follow a single style but shared a powerful desire to disrupt both society and the art world. They replaced reason and logic with the absurd, unpredictable, and chaotic. Their creative expressions included experimental theater, playful games, guttural sounds, collage, photomontage, chance-based methods, and the famous "readymade" pieces, like Marcel Duchamp’s groundbreaking urinal, Fountain (1917).

For Dadaists, the visual look of their work was less important than the ideas and critiques it conveyed. This mindset positions Dada as a key forerunner to conceptual art.
