Denmark’s Catalyst. The Life and Letters of N. F. S. Grundtvig brings together the expertise of translator Edward Broadbridge and Grundtvig scholar Hans Raun Iversen to present a comprehensive portrait of this remarkable Dane.

Grundtvig (1783-1872) wore many hats-as a pastor, educator, poet, politician, and philosopher. Internationally, he is best known for pioneering the concept of the folk high school and championing ideas like ‘learning for life’ and ‘lifelong learning.’ Within Denmark, he holds a revered place as a nation-builder and advocate for the common good.

This richly illustrated biography is enhanced by 70 personal letters that reveal Grundtvig’s candid experiences, including his romantic life, struggles with depression, and his four journeys to England.

Edward Broadbridge, originally from London, has spent much of his life in Denmark and received the Grundtvig Prize for his translations of Grundtvig’s hymns. Hans Raun Iversen, a theologian at Copenhagen University, holds an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University and has published extensively on Grundtvig’s work.
