In the Spirit of Democracy is a concise collection of political reflections by George Manus, originally penned in 2016 and revisited nearly a decade later. Alongside these thoughts, the book includes a recent report and selected short reflections related to politics and life values.

This book shares a reflection titled "In the Spirit of Democracy," first written in 2016 and included in Manus's 2022 collection, 217 Reflections. Though brief at about five pages, it captures some of his political perspectives at that time, which he still largely agrees with today.

Following this is a short report called "A Day to Be Remembered," written in June 2024, which speaks for itself. Additionally, the author has handpicked 84 political reflections from his 2020 book, Food for Thought - 1001 Short Reflections. These are arranged alphabetically in the table of contents and are typically only a few lines long.

Having lived in Spain for the past 15 to 20 years and now over eighty-five, Manus acknowledges that some of these political thoughts reflect his experiences there. However, they mainly express his personal opinions. Throughout his life, he has been deeply interested in people's attitudes, a focus that has grown stronger in recent years, especially given his extensive writing career with 24 published books over the last decade.

Manus believes that politicians in democratic societies should be grounded in solid and fair life values and attitudes, as they are entrusted with governing on behalf of taxpayers. To illustrate this, he includes 34 reflections related to Life Values and Attitudes, written between 1990 and 2023. These reflections serve as a way to test and present his views on these important topics.

Each reflection spans two to five pages and is followed-except for a few longer ones-by four related Food for Thought entries. Many of these reflections are deeply personal, underscoring Manus's view that life values and attitudes are essential tools for managing life.

While he does not claim these reflections offer definitive answers on life values and attitudes, Manus hopes they serve as a meaningful reminder of their significance for everyone, especially those involved in politics.
