Having lived and worked in Iran during the 1950s, author and architect Hans Munk Hansen has made Isfahan a central focus of his career. Over the years, he has repeatedly returned with his camera and sketchbook to delve into the city’s spirit and document a millennium of its remarkably preserved architecture.

Every map and floor plan featured in this book is crafted by Hansen himself, who has also spent more than sixty years capturing the city through his photography. Many images carry a nostalgic quality, revealing Isfahan before it transformed into the modern city it is today, preserving a history that might otherwise have been lost.

The latest photographs date back to 2015 and include detailed views of the Friday Mosque. With its elaborate pillars and countless brick arches, the mosque, much like Isfahan as a whole, offers a captivating array of distinctive architectural details.
