An immersive journey through the pivotal events of Middle-earth's Second Age.

J. R. R. Tolkien once described the Second Age as a 'dark age' with much of its history left untold. For years, fans had only brief glimpses from The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, touching on moments like the forging of the Rings of Power, the construction of Barad-dûr, and Sauron's ascent.

It wasn’t until after Tolkien’s passing that Christopher Tolkien published The Silmarillion, shedding more light on this era. While The Silmarillion primarily focuses on the First Age, it concludes with crucial tales about Númenor’s dramatic rise and fall. Númenor, an island kingdom gifted to Men for their aid against Morgoth, flourished in power and wealth but ultimately faced a tragic downfall, climaxing in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

Further insights into the Second Age appeared in later works such as Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth and the extensive twelve-volume History of Middle-earth series, where Christopher Tolkien shared many of his father's drafts and stories.

Now, editor Brian Sibley has compiled a comprehensive narrative of the Second Age, closely following the timeline from The Lord of the Rings appendices. This edition presents Tolkien’s own words from various texts, brought vividly to life with new watercolour and pencil illustrations by renowned Tolkien artist Alan Lee, making it a must-have for fans eager to explore this fascinating chapter of Middle-earth’s history.
