Year Of The Monkey

Beskrivelse

Year of the Monkey is a captivating memoir by Patti Smith, following a year of wandering and reflection after her New Year's concerts at San Francisco's Fillmore. This poetic journey blends reality and imagination as Smith navigates change, loss, and hope.

A deeply personal exploration of a transformative year marked by grief, discovery, and resilience.

After performing a series of New Year's shows at the iconic Fillmore in San Francisco, Patti Smith finds herself wandering along the Santa Cruz coastline, setting out on a solitary year of introspection and adventure. Untethered by logic or time, she invites readers into her unique inner world, guided by mysterious signs-one even talks back, much like a playful Cheshire Cat.

As February ushers in the surreal lunar year of the monkey, unexpected twists, mischievous moments, and profound sorrow emerge. A stranger’s words echo throughout: "Anything is possible: after all, it's the year of the monkey." For Smith, an endlessly curious soul and keen observer, this year becomes a reckoning with life's upheavals-grappling with loss, aging, and the shifting political climate in America.

Blending the vast Western landscape with her own dreamlike visions, Smith's journey takes her from Southern California to the Arizona desert, from a Kentucky farm where she supports a friend in crisis, to the hospital bedside of a cherished mentor. Alongside these real places, she drifts through memories and imagined scenes, crafting a memoir that weaves fact and fiction with poetic grace.

Amid grief and disillusionment, the unexpected unfolds. Yet, as Smith approaches a new decade in her life, she offers readers a gift: her sharp wit, clear-eyed insight, and an enduring hope for a better world. Illustrated with her iconic Polaroid photographs, Year of the Monkey is an elegant, often humorous, and deeply moving work-a powerful reflection for our turbulent times.
