Beskrivelse
Discover a remarkable artistic find that reshapes art history, revealing unknown works by two influential painters connected across time and geography. This collection uncovers a fascinating link between Danish and French art traditions.
An exploration of the artistic bond between Camille Pissarro and Fritz Melbye and their impact on Impressionism.
Several decades ago, a stunning collection of hundreds of artworks and sketches was uncovered beneath a staircase in a New York State home. This discovery unveiled previously unseen pieces by two artists: one renowned as a pioneer of French Impressionism, and the other nearly erased from art history.
The collection also unlocks a largely overlooked connection between the Danish Golden Age and French Impressionism. Around 1850, Camille Pissarro met Danish painter Fritz Melbye on Pissarro’s native Caribbean island, St Thomas. They then spent several years travelling and working closely together.
Pissarro and Melbye delves into the importance of this artistic partnership, tracing their shared time in the Caribbean and Venezuela through a diverse selection of works. Featuring sketches, watercolours, and oil paintings from both artists, the book argues that Melbye was Pissarro’s first teacher and a crucial link to the Danish Golden Age tradition.
Richly illustrated with pieces from the rediscovered trove, this volume offers a fresh perspective on Impressionism, adding a new chapter to its story.
