An engaging exploration of Trinidad & Tobago’s heritage and a comprehensive map of the Eastern Caribbean region.
Trinidad, situated just north of Venezuela, stands out as the southernmost Caribbean island with a distinct history compared to its neighbors. Originally settled by the Spanish who displaced the native inhabitants, it later became a British possession in 1797. Tobago, located further north, has a fascinating past marked by frequent changes in control-switching hands around 30 times due to various European conflicts over regional dominance.
Today, both islands rely heavily on tourism, though neither has fully developed its resort potential. Most visitors arrive by cruise ship, often spending their time exploring Port-of-Spain, Trinidad’s capital. One of Trinidad’s unique features is a natural pool of hot asphalt, discovered by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1595, which has historically been used for ship caulking.
Tobago, once known for its tobacco plantations, is now a peaceful community centered around its capitals, Scarborough and Plymouth. The two islands were officially joined by Britain in 1889, and the country gained independence in 1962.
The reverse side of this map showcases the entire Eastern Caribbean, highlighting the boundaries of various island nations. Some remain colonies or overseas territories, while others are popular tourist destinations. Notably, a small, uninhabited island called Navassa is contested between Haiti and the USA. St. Croix’s boundaries are distinctly separate from the rest of the US Virgin Islands, despite its association with them. Anguilla sees few visitors, whereas nearby St. Maarten is a top cruise destination.
The map also features two islands named Bonaire-one located in the rarely visited St. Eustatius, and the other off Venezuela’s coast in the Dutch Antilles. French influences dominate Martinique and Guadeloupe, separated by the English-speaking island of Dominica. Antigua is linked to distant Barbuda, and Montserrat remains a British colony. The map is scaled at 1:135,000, providing detailed geographic context.
