This book explores the development of the theory behind the Aesthetic Sense of Nature, tracing its origins and the author's reflections on our connection with the natural world. It brings together philosophical insights and personal observations to propose a fresh perspective on how humans relate to nature.
Examining the interplay between the designed environment and the natural, grown world through a philosophical lens.
Years ago, the author began jotting down initial ideas that would eventually evolve into the theory of the Aesthetic Sense of Nature. A key milestone came in 2014 with the Empowerment of Aesthetics Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, where the distinction between the built environment and the grown environment was clearly defined. The grown environment refers to all living matter not shaped or maintained in a specific form.
This complementary view of the designed and grown worlds has since become central to the author's work. The book compiles a decade's worth of reflections, drawing on Kant’s philosophy and exploring concepts like the beautiful, the sublime, and humanity’s ability to be influenced-and even transformed-by interactions with nature and its phenomena.
Influences from thinkers such as Hannah Arendt on community, Niels Bohr on complementarity, and Asger Jorn on creativity are woven throughout the text. Additionally, an underlying current of Chinese philosophy subtly informs the author's perspective.
The goal is to bring together these complex ideas to form a new understanding of our relationship with nature-one that frees us from limiting notions and fosters a life of true freedom alongside the natural world. This freedom goes beyond mere personal choice; it embodies openness, empathy, and respect for all species and forms of life.
