Modernity has brought with it the slow breakdown of traditional social bonds at many levels, and we may now be witnessing the peak of this trend. Rising nationalism threatens both national and international communities, while inequality grows. Often, people come together in suspicion or even hostility toward others. Hans Christian Andersen lived during the early stages of these changes and was deeply aware of the dangers they posed.

As old communities transformed, new ones began to emerge, often centered around cultural elements like literature. Andersen’s work and cultural influence continue to draw people worldwide, demonstrating this phenomenon vividly. The 2017 conference "Hans Christian Andersen and Community," held at the University of Southern Denmark to honor the 150th anniversary of Andersen’s honorary citizenship in Odense, highlighted this magnetic effect.
