Emerging in the mid-1990s, Jamie Hewlett first made waves as the co-creator of the cult comic Tank Girl, a defining piece of the era’s spirit. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as hip hop and zombie slasher films, he teamed up with then-roommate Damon Albarn to bring to life Gorillaz, a groundbreaking virtual band composed of animated characters.

Gorillaz quickly became a global sensation, topping charts worldwide, touring extensively from San Diego to Syria, and accumulating hundreds of millions of streams and record sales. Hewlett’s creative partnership with Albarn extended beyond music, including an elaborate staging of the Chinese classic Monkey: Journey to the West, featuring circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and traditional Chinese singers.

Recognized for his innovative work, Hewlett was named Designer of the Year by London’s Design Museum in 2006. Alongside Albarn, he received a BAFTA in 2009 for their animated sequence for the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2015, his exhibition The Suggestionists at the Saatchi Gallery showcased a fresh and exciting direction in his artistic practice.

This special edition, marking TASCHEN's 40th anniversary, updates Hewlett’s first major monograph with around 30 new works. It presents over 400 pieces, tracing his creative evolution from the Tank Girl era through Gorillaz and into his current projects. Through a rich collection of stories, characters, comic strips, and sketches, the book celebrates Hewlett’s remarkable inventiveness and his refusal to be confined to any single artistic style.
