In 1953, Marlon Brando made a lasting impression as Johnny, the leader of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, sporting a black leather Perfecto jacket, denim jeans, and engineer boots in The Wild One. Inspired by this rebellious look, Tom of Finland shifted from brown leather to create his own fierce biker men in 1954-muscular, hyper-masculine figures clad in black leather, embodying raw power and freedom.

That same year, the Satyrs Motorcycle Club, the first gay outlaw club, embraced Tom’s vision, turning his fantasy into reality. Tom didn’t stop there; he personalized his biker icons with leather jodhpurs, knee-high boots, and leather caps. Each motorcycle proudly displayed the brand name "Tom" on its gas tank, marking his unique stamp on the biker culture.

Tom’s biker characters first appeared as two "Motorcycle Boys" in the Winter 1958 issue of Physique Pictorial, with another biker featured on the cover in April 1960. From then on, bikers became a dominant theme in his work, reflecting both his American audience and his own fascination. In 1968, Tom introduced Kake, a biker leatherman who served as a personal avatar, starring in detailed 26-panel stories that showcased his riding adventures in all forms.

Kake’s iconic look-black leather jacket, white t-shirt, jeans, and high boots-became Tom’s own signature style for the rest of his life.

The Little Book of Tom: Bikers compiles Tom of Finland’s earliest Physique Pictorial biker images, Kake’s motorcycle gear, engaging biker panel stories, and striking single drawings.
