Growing up, Tom’s first crush was a strong farmhand near his family home, surrounded by Finland’s hardy men-fishermen braving icy waters, loggers in vast forests, and farmers harvesting oats, rye, and barley. These men wore practical, protective clothing like leather, which Tom admired deeply. He once said, “When I was young, leather was worn by people who worked outside because it was warm. All the men who wore leather, they were the type of men which I adored.”

As Tom began to draw, he celebrated these early inspirations by updating their outfits with tight jeans, faded T-shirts, and iconic thigh-high, beak-toed Lappish boots. One such character, a young logger dressed this way, appeared on the spring 1957 cover of Physique Pictorial, marking Tom’s introduction to the world.

Over the years, Tom expanded his roster of blue-collar heroes to include truckers, repairmen, construction workers, circus roustabouts, and the American cowboy. While these figures were born from his sexual fantasies, Tom’s portrayal of working-class men helped gay men from similar backgrounds embrace their identities.

The Little Book of Tom: Blue Collar brings together Tom’s fascination with these rugged men in a compact volume. It features a strong lineup of multi-panel comics, single-panel drawings, and paintings, alongside archival and contextual materials such as historic film stills, posters, personal photos of Tom, sketches, and his own reference images.
