The New Synthesis explores the interconnected roles of government, citizens, and society within a dynamic system of governance. This approach aims to create innovative solutions and shape a better future collectively.

A collaborative initiative redefining public administration through shared discovery and innovation.

The New Synthesis (NS) initiative highlights the interdependent relationship between government, people, and society, forming a vibrant and evolving governing system. Its goal is to foster new ideas and work together toward building a brighter future.

Between 2012 and 2015, over one thousand participants engaged with the NS Initiative, each embarking on their own journey of exploration and learning. This second volume of the NS series captures four of those journeys, emphasizing the importance of fresh conversations about public innovation, leadership in the public sector, and critical discussions around economic theories and demographic principles.

Jocelyne Bourgon, the author, leads Public Governance International (PGI) and spearheads the New Synthesis Initiative-an international collaborative research project pushing the boundaries of public administration. With a distinguished career including roles as Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet of Canada, she has also served as Deputy Minister for several key departments such as Transport, the Canadian International Development Agency, and Consumer and Corporate Affairs.

Beyond national service, Bourgon has held prestigious positions including President of a UN Committee of Experts in Public Administration and Governance, President of the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM), and Canada’s Ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

She is also the author of A New Synthesis of Public Administration: Serving in the 21st Century (2011), which was translated into Danish in 2017 as Den Nye Syntese for offentlig værdiskabelse.
