The Age Of Diagnosis: Sickness, Health And Why Medicine Has Gone Too Far

Beskrivelse

More people than ever are being diagnosed with conditions ranging from autism and ADHD to allergies and long Covid. But could these labels sometimes do more harm than good? This book explores how the lines between health and illness are shifting in surprising ways.

Examining the evolving definitions of sickness and health in modern medicine.

In today’s world, the boundaries that separate sickness from health are constantly being redrawn. Mental health categories are expanding and changing, reshaping what society considers 'normal.' Genetic testing can reveal potential diseases decades before symptoms appear, sometimes even before birth. Meanwhile, increased health screenings lead many to believe they are unwell when they might not be.

While an accurate diagnosis can provide clarity and better treatment options, many diagnoses are not as clear-cut as we assume. In some cases, they risk turning perfectly healthy individuals into patients. Drawing on real-life stories, decades of clinical experience, and the latest medical research, Dr. Suzanne O’Sullivan challenges long-standing beliefs and offers a fresh perspective on how we view illness and wellness.

As noted by The Times in their Books to Look Out For in 2025, Dr. O’Sullivan’s compassionate yet bold approach tackles the dangers of over-diagnosis in conditions like autism, allergies, ADHD, and long Covid, making this an essential read for anyone interested in the future of medicine.
