Beskrivelse

A timeless masterpiece, The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri takes readers on a profound journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. This edition features fresh interpretations by Danish artist Alexander Tovborg and writer Ditlev Tamm, blending vivid artwork with insightful commentary.

A modern artistic and literary take on Dante’s classic exploration of the afterlife.

Written over seven centuries ago, The Divine Comedy remains one of the most celebrated works in world literature. It follows a week-long voyage through the three realms of the afterlife: Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. In this unique edition, Danish visual artist Alexander Tovborg and writer Ditlev Tamm offer a contemporary perspective on Dante’s timeless narrative.

Over eight years, Tovborg produced nearly one hundred vibrant fine-art prints that bring key scenes and characters of the Comedy to life. Alongside these striking images, Ditlev Tamm retells the story in a clear and engaging style, providing thoughtful reflections and insights into both the text and Tovborg’s illustrations.

Together, they create an accessible and distinctive introduction to Dante’s epic poem that resonates with readers of all ages.

Alexander Tovborg (b. 1983) is a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe. His work frequently features religious and mythical symbols presented in naïve, simplified forms within complex and colorful compositions, spanning painting, installation, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and performance.

Ditlev Tamm (b. 1946) is professor emeritus of Legal History at the University of Copenhagen and a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. As an author, commentator, and social critic, he has published extensively on Danish and European history, legal and political history, biographies, as well as literature, theatre, and ballet. He has also written on Dante and translated Dante’s De Monarchia and J. L. Borges’s essays on Dante into Danish.
