Born around 4 BC in Spain, Lucius Annaeus Seneca was raised with traditional Roman republican values. He became Nero’s tutor in AD 48 and later his chief civil advisor. When Nero ordered his death in AD 65, Seneca chose to take his own life before the decree could be carried out.
