Thomas Bartholin was a pioneering Danish physician and anatomist known for his groundbreaking work in the 17th century. His contributions to anatomy and medicine, along with his role as an educator and editor, left a lasting impact on scientific knowledge.

Thomas Bartholin (1616–1680) gained fame for discovering and naming the lymphatic vessels, and for editing Europe’s most popular anatomy textbook of his era. He also founded and edited the world’s first medical journal, establishing himself as a key communicator of scientific ideas.

Over his lifetime, Bartholin published more than 80 works, mostly focused on anatomy and medicine. However, his interests extended beyond, as he also wrote about topics like unicorns, comets, and bioluminescence. His extensive correspondence with fellow physicians and scholars offers a rich scientific and cultural archive.

Serving as a professor of anatomy and medicine for over three decades, and as dean of the medical faculty, Bartholin played a crucial role in advancing medical education at the University of Copenhagen. He was also a mentor to the renowned anatomist, geologist, and theologian Niels Stensen (1638–1686), significantly influencing Stensen’s scientific achievements.
