Beskrivelse
Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery’s Atlas of Anatomy is a landmark work in medical history, renowned for its detailed and stunning anatomical illustrations. This comprehensive collection remains one of the finest anatomical references ever created.
A masterful collaboration that produced an unparalleled anatomical and surgical visual guide.
Starting in 1830, Bourgery teamed up with Nicolas Henri Jacob, a talented illustrator trained by the French painter Jacques Louis David, to create this extraordinary atlas. The initial volumes appeared in 1831, but completing the entire project took nearly twenty years. Bourgery managed to finish his masterpiece before passing away, though the final volume wasn’t fully published until five years later.
The atlas spans eight volumes covering descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques, general anatomy and embryology, as well as microscopic anatomy. It meticulously details nearly every major surgical procedure practiced in the early 19th century. Jacob’s hand-colored lithographs stand out for their precision, vivid coloration, and artistic beauty, blending direct laboratory observation with careful research. These illustrations continue to provide exceptional anatomical understanding, serving not only medical professionals but also artists, students, and anyone fascinated by the human body’s complexity.
